What is a Standard?

Here are some of the definitions, among many others, that you will find when you Google “standard.”

1. a level of quality or attainment.

Example: their restaurant offers a high standard of service

synonyms: quality, level, grade, caliber, merit, excellence

Example: the standard of her work

2. an idea or thing used as a measure, norm, or model in comparative evaluations.

Example: the wages are low by today’s standards

Is this the right standard that we’re looking for here?

Not really…

Protip: If you want Google to give you the relevant meaning, you have to provide Google relevant keywords.

Don’t just type in “standard.”

Instead, you can type “what is the meaning of standard in ISO?”

Google will direct you to the main page of iso, https://www.iso.org/.

So what is a standard when we talk about ISO standards?

“A standard is a document, established by a consensus of subject matter experts and approved by a recognized body that provides guidance on the design, use or performance of materials, products, processes, services, systems or persons.”

To simplify, a standard is a document that provides guidance.

So, the ISO 9001 standard is the guidance you use on Quality Management System.

Once you decide to get certified with ISO 9001, you have to apply the requirements set in the ISO 9001 standard.
